Haymaker Histories: Highlighting Sarah "Jane" (Howard) Horn, Class of ’62

Recently, many Phillipians shared their stories with us as part of the PU Oral History Project. The following is one of these special stories.

One of my favorite stories is about my time at Phillips University.

It all started with my wonderful major professor, Thayne Hedges. He was a great teacher, and both my husband and brother took an introductory class from him just so they could understand my speech pathology talk. They were genuinely interested in learning more about my field of study.

Phillips also had some great social service clubs, like Zonta, the women’s club I was a part of. We had a lot of fun together, and it was through Zonta that I asked my husband out on our first date to a formal dance. After that, he ended up asking me out on our first ‘real’ date, which was our little in-joke about who made the first move. I was even honored to be named the Zonta president the following year.

Phillips was such a special experience, and we still treasure the friendships we made there.

One of my favorite service projects was providing babysitting for the Phillips professors, including young Michael Hedges, Thayne’s son, who went on to become a famous Windham Hill guitarist. Michael passed away in a car accident at a young age, but I always stayed in touch with his parents.

Now today, even after 40 years, a group of 16 women from my dorm at Phillips started getting together every two years to reconnect. We couldn’t meet in person during COVID-19, but now we catch up on Zoom every few months. It’s been wonderful to maintain those close bonds from our time at Phillips University.
