Announcing the Pratt Family Endowed Scholarship

The Phillips University Legacy Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Pratt Family Endowed Scholarship, made possible by a generous gift from alumnus Harold Pratt ’56 and his wife, Norby.

This fully funded endowment marks the Foundation’s ninth endowed scholarship and reflects a deep commitment to higher education and leadership development for students attending Disciples-related colleges and universities that continues the mission Phillips University championed for nearly 100 years.

The Pratt Family’s connection to Phillips University spans three generations and is deeply embedded in family history. Harold’s parents, George and Beth Pratt, were both Phillips graduates, and it was on the Phillips campus that Harold met Nita Kent, whom he married shortly after graduation in 1956. Together, they raised three sons, Richard, David, and Gregory, each of whom also attended Phillips University. Although Harold and Nita later amicably found different paths after 24 years of marriage, their shared Phillips story remains an enduring part of the family’s legacy.

For Harold, Phillips University was far more than a place of study—it was a formative experience that provided lasting academic, social, and spiritual grounding. That foundation shaped a distinguished career in science education and national leadership, instilling a lifelong commitment to service and gratitude.

“Phillips gave me the academic confidence, sense of purpose, and values that guided everything I was fortunate enough to do professionally,” Harold shared. “Supporting the Legacy Foundation feels both like an obligation and a privilege – an opportunity to give back to the institution that gave me so much.”

After a lifetime of professional service that included leadership within Jefferson County Public Schools in Colorado, work with the National Academies of Sciences, and election as President of the National Science Teachers Association, Harold sought a meaningful way to continue supporting education in the spirit of Phillips University, even beyond the life of the institution itself. The Phillips University Legacy Foundation provided that opportunity, offering clarity, demonstrated impact, and a mission closely aligned with his values.

The Pratt Family Endowed Scholarship also lovingly and intentionally includes Norby, who has been a cherished member of the Pratt family for more than 40 years. The scholarship stands as a testament to enduring love, gratitude, and family unity. Harold hopes this endowment will both honor Norby and strengthen the Pratt family’s lasting connection to Phillips University.

Through this generous gift, Harold and Norby ensure that the Phillips legacy – rooted in faith, scholarship, leadership, and service – will continue to open doors and inspire future generations. The Foundation is deeply grateful for their vision and is honored to steward this lasting legacy.
