D.O.D 04/22/2001 - Donald L. Atherton was born March 1, 1920, in Waukomis, Oklahoma to Joe and Grace Atherton and died Sunday, April 22, 2001, in Austin, TX. He graduated from Waukomis High School and attended Phillips University. During World War II, he trained as a pilot and flew supplies over "the Hump" into China. In 1944, he married Elsie Marie Kendall. He served in the Air Force until his retirement in 1966 at Austin, Texas. The couple built their last home in Briarcliff, near Austin, and lived there more than 20 years. Surviving are one brother, Milton of Waukomis; his children, Donna Atherton Gallin, Joan Atherton Thompson, Lorraine Atherton, Alan Atherton, Debra Atherton Copeland and James Atherton; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife. | |
