|Miles, Delbert Eugene||1954|
D.O.D 03/29/2012 - Delbert Eugene Miles was born October 13, 1922, in Kingfisher to S.L. and Beula (Davis) Miles.
Delbert, known as Deb, received his early education in Kingfisher and in the Enid area.
In December 1941, following the Pearl Harbor attack, Deb joined the U.S. Army, later transferring into the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Deb married his best friendís sister, Ellen Wyckoff, in Enid in June 1942. Ellen and Deb were sweethearts and soul mates for 69 years. Their only son, Gary, was born in 1943.
The family moved around the southern states during World War II following Debsí Army Air Corps assignments. Deb was an aircraft mechanic and later in the war, a flight engineer on a B-29.
After the war, Deb worked for several years for the Santa Fe Railroad as a fireman before he was called into the Christian ministry in 1950.
He went to college on the GI Bill and attended William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., and Phillips University in Enid. Following graduation from Phillips in 1954, Deb went on to graduate from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1958.
Ellen ardently supported her husband in Baptist church pastorates from Broomfield, Colorado, to Oklahoma towns of Pond Creek, Olustee, Chattanooga, Enid, Sapulpa and Holdenville.
After his retirement, Deb worked for over five years as Chaplain at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center in Enid.
In 2000, Ellen and Deb moved to Bartlesville to be near their son and daughter-in-law. In April 2011, they began residing at Forrest Manor Nursing Home in Dewey, and his beloved Ellen passed away December 15, 2011.
Deb is survived by his son, Gary. He died March 29, 2012.
