The VISION of the Phillips University Legacy Foundation is to provide and sustain a premier scholarship and leadership development program for scholars attending institutions of higher education that are currently or historically related to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

The MISSION of the Phillips University Legacy Foundation is to follow the tradition of Phillips University by providing scholarships and opportunities to educate and develop leaders who embody Christian values in their lives, service and work.                              

The GOAL of the Phillips University Legacy Foundation is to empower the Legacy Scholars to become lifelong leaders by developing the attributes that are represented by the four pillars of a Phillips University education: intellectual, spiritual, physical and social.

The PRINCIPLES of the Phillips University Legacy Foundation, which the Foundation Members, supporters, staff and the Legacy Scholars value and uphold, are as follows: 

Personal Growth and Challenges  

  1. Developing skills and confidence through participation in leadership and servant roles with a goal of future leadership and service to local and global communities
  2. Challenging one’s self intellectually, spiritually, physically, and socially
  3. Exploring opportunities and challenges outside of one’s comfort zone
  4. Completing a higher education with manageable debt

Developing Awareness of Self and Empathy with Others

  1. Utilizing self-reflection that includes an increasing awareness of one’s beliefs, values, attitudes, and emotions that motivate one to take action
  2. Developing an increasing ability to understand and appreciate the beliefs, life experiences, and values of others

Utilizing Collaboration and Problem Solving

  1. Developing an appreciation for and commitment to diversity
  2. Developing the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others in ways that build trust
  3. Multiplying group effectiveness and generating creative solutions and actions

Developing Ethical Leadership Principles and Practices

  1. Developing integrity by achieving congruence between one’s own values and one’s actions
  2. Utilizing integrity and ethical leadership skills for effective leadership in civic, professional, and personal dimensions of life

Utilizing Engagement and Citizenship

  1. Promoting positive civic engagement and social responsibility through an ethic of service and a concern for justice, and working for positive change; on behalf of others and the community, thereby growing an attitude for a lifetime of service
  2. Recognizing that the common purpose of a group must incorporate a sense of concern for the rights and welfare of tho­­­­­­­se who might be affected by the group’s efforts
  3. Recognizing that change means improving the status quo, creating a better world, and demonstrating a comfort with transition and ambiguity in the change process

Sharing a Commitment to Action

  1. Developing the motivation to translate knowledge into action, foster buy-in and support, and become actively involved in individual and collaborative efforts that foster personal and social change
  2. Recognizing the common purpose, shared aims, values, and mission of the group, and facilitating a group’s ability to engage in collective analysis of issues and tasks to be undertaken
