Dear Phillips University Friend,

We have become aware of statements and conversations recently on the Phillips University Alumni and Friends Facebook page which may have negatively impacted friends, alumni, and others who are connected to the PU family and the work that the Phillips University Legacy Foundation (“PULF”) provides. More importantly, we are aware that there are questions, and the board of directors of the Legacy Foundation wants to make sure that the PU alumni, friends, and Legacy Scholars and their families understand why the organization exists and how we operate.

The Phillips University Legacy Foundation was established in 2000 in order to, in the words of our mission statement, “follow the tradition of Phillips University by providing scholarships and opportunities to educate and develop leaders who embody Christian values in their lives, service and work”. The new organization was conceived by the Phillips University Alumni and Friends Association (“PUAFA”), as a solution for how the university could continue to make an impact in the lives of young people.  The Phillips University Trustees donated the funds that created the initial investment that seeded PULF from the assets remaining following the closing of the University. Since its inception, PULF and its board of directors have distributed over $1.5 Million in scholarships to a total of 169 recipients who have attended 16 Leadership Developmment Conferences and performed over 440 volunteer service projects, all in the name of Phillips University.

PULF is a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit organization with the IRS and is governed by its corporate members and an independent board of directors. A complete list of our board is available here. As part of PULF’s compliance as a nonprofit organization, we file a Form 990 each year with the IRS which is available on-line through Guidestar (https://www.guidestar.org/profile/73-1585868).  As a public charity, copies are also available through our organization. This is only one of the ways we seek to be transparent about our mission and activities.

We understand that the relationships between the PULF, PUAFA, and PU organizations can be confusing. They are separate entities each with their own mission and purpose, IRS status, boards of directors, and decisions to make in order to support their mission. Though they each have a different focus, the organizations share the mutual purpose of supporting the “Phillips Family” in each of their own unique ways.

Some of the questions that have recently arisen have been about the ongoing relationship between Phillips University, Inc. – which continues to exist as an educational nonprofit corporation – and the Legacy Foundation. Since seeding the Legacy Foundation in 2000, PU has continued to play a major role in supporting the Foundation to ensure that PULF is able to fulfill its mission.

We encourage interested alumni and friends to visit our website at www.pulf.org to learn more about us. If you have any questions about PULF, its mission, its purpose or its programs please contact me directly at nancy@pulf.org  We will be happy to answer questions you have about the organizational relationships, and we will share more information with you as the relationships between the organizations continue to evolve.

The Legacy Foundation’s mission is being carried out through the generosity of our donors and students who participate in our scholarship and leadership development program. Our Legacy Scholar Graduates include Ministers, Teachers, Musicians, Scientists, Cancer Researchers, Doctors, Nurses, Communication Directors, Missionaries, Peace Corp Volunteers, Nonprofit Professionals and countless other professions.  These young people, who have benefited from the financial and leadership support received through this organization, are strong advocates for the ideals, values, and vocations that were so important to the many alumni and professionals whose lives were touched by our alma mater, Phillips University.

Sincerely,

Nancy Nicholson Phillips ‘71
